The Cross Stitcher's Bible
Published in Paperback by David & Charles (February, 2003)
Author: Jane Greenoff
Average review score:

This is an "okay" book,
but the projects in it are not what I would stitch...I have found better books than this one, although it does have a nice layout.

A "must-have" for every stitcher - new or experienced.
I've done embroidery since I was a young girl - that's over 25 years now. I only started cross stitching less than a year ago, so I was eager to find a book that put everything I need to know in one place. That's what this book does.

There are easy, step-by-step drawings and photographs that cover not only every conceivable stitch, but other cross stitch techniques, fabric choices, color choices, reading a chart...anything you could need to know.

Get this book!

The guide I turn to every time...
The Cross Stitcher's Bible is the guide book I turn to every time I start a new project. I would recomend this book to EVERY needlework worker wheather beginer or experianced. There is basic, clear, compleate information on counted cross stitch, some embroidery work, hardanger, pulled and drawn thread and a varity of speciallty stitches. There is also a host of information on chosing fabrics, threads, how to begin on aida and linen, information on streatching, cleaning, and framing and dozens of patters and suggestions for thier use. I have been stitching since my teens and I still use this book almost every single time I sit down to work on a project. It is a compact way to make sure you are doing things the correct way to have your work turn out wonderfully!

Classroom Assessment Techniques : A Handbook for College Teachers
Published in Paperback by Jossey-Bass (October, 1994)
Authors: Thomas A. Angelo and K. Patricia Cross
Average review score:

Sourcebook Of Best Teaching Techniques
Although the title is certainly somewhat misleading, this is a good sourcebook of the best teaching techniques culled from a wide range of instructional situations. There is something here for everyone in every situation, elementary ed, high school, community college, and yes, those of us at universities too.

I can't imagine many educators who will not find something to improve their teaching effectiveness in this book. A great advantage is that each technique is presented individually so that you can literally pick and choose and then try them out without having to read extensively to understand the potential for each.

If you teach (this is my 25th year teaching college), I recommend two books once you have spent a few years at it and want to continue to improve your effectiveness....this one and Nobel Laureate Richard Feynman's "Six Easy Pieces"

Both more and less than I expected
The rating of 4 stars I'm giving this is a combination of 3 stars and 5 stars. Some of the techniques presented are worth the 5 stars; the lack of actual forms or examples as administered is the 3 stars. There are many examples of each technique, but all are given as narrative descriptions, not as copies of the assessment form or handout.

One thing potential buyers should be aware of: THIS IS NOT A BOOK ABOUT GIVING TESTS. If you are looking for how to write tests, how to test your students, how to design exams, try James Popham or something similar. This is a book full of ways to survey your students to determine whether they are ready to learn, whether they are ready to absorb more information, whether they are understanding the material - but not tests.

Let me give you examples of the techniques I found immediately useful:
Technique #1: Background Knowledge Probe. This is to be given at the first class meeting, to see whether your students know what they're supposed to before they start your class. Here's how I administered it: I teach a course called "Quantitative Applications Software." It's mainly about using Microsoft Excel and related spreadsheets, and it's primarily for business majors to fill their core computer requirement. I prepared a survey form which had about 20 questions in all, with three columns to check off: "Know how to do this" (have studies it, remember it, can calculate it), "Have heard of this" (the concept is familiar but I don't remember how to figure it) and "Not familiar with this." The items to rate were divided into 3 categories: math knowledge (Square roots, exponents, order of operations); business concepts (compound interest, present value, mortgages, multi-state sales taxes) and Excel concepts - which is what the students would be learning, but some already know (built-in statistical functions, calculating loan payments, setting up invoicing systems, working with multiple files.) The students filled out this survey anonymously, so no one had to be embarrassed, and then after scanning the surveys, I announced that people who were unsure of the math concepts could get tutoring, people who knew all the Excel concepts might be able to test out of the course, and for everybody else, I would have an idea of how much time to spend explaining background math before introducing an Excel function.

Technique #25: Student-generated test questions. Students have to generate both questions and answers. This allows you to see what they think is the most important material they've studied so far, whether they've done only the homework or also studied handouts and their lecture notes, and whether they can organize their thinking. This one should be done only after you've already given the students at least one exam or a few quizzes, so that they know the length and difficulty of questions you expect.

On the other hand, many of the techniques are not very useful for my subject area - some are writing-intensive and don't fit in with a course that is mostly hands-on lab work; some require students to list pros and cons of something - not necessarily feasible in a course where there's a fixed minimum of material that MUST be covered, whether the students like it or not. More useful, I suspect, for classes where there are issues and current events and discussions, than for computer science basics.

Amazing even if you don't use it as originally intended.
This book is a great explanation of and suggestions for evaluating teaching and learning primarily at the college level. In college, a professor or instructor may have hundreds of students unless you teach a very rare subject or at are a very small school. These fast and often fun exercises are a neat way to figure out how much your students are learning and how to teach better. They could also be used as graded tests but primarily the book was intended for pure assessment. Since students, over-booked with classes in the age of a flat-fee system, may resent too much gradeless assessment, you'll have to read the atmosphere of your own classes and decide how best to use this.

Cross-Examination: Science & Techniques
Published in Hardcover by Lexis Law Pub (June, 1993)
Authors: Larry S. Pozner and Roger J. Dodd
Average review score:

A Complete but Complex Critique
Pozner & Dodd present a very well-organized protocol for conducting cross examinations. The core of their advice is perfectly sound. I highly recommend reading chapters 3 ("Developing a Theory"), 9 ("The Chapter Method"), 10 ("Page Preparation"), 11 ("Sequences"), 12 ("Only Three Rules"), 17 ("Loops"), and 18 ("Trilogies").

Other chapters include useful information, but the authors unnecessarily complicate the practice of cross examination. Few practitioners would have the necessary time to devote to preparing cross examinations as Pozner and Dodd recommend.

The book contains a highly detailed table of contents. You can almost get the full benefit of the book by studying the table of contents.

Helpful stuff, but not user friendly
The best thing about this book is its attempt to systematize the difficult and too-often mysticised craft of cross-examination. The worst thing about it is that the authors did not apply the level of thinking that they advocate for cross-examination to the design and content of the book, which is poorly organized, diffuse, and a general nuisance to deal with because of its pervasive shapelessness. It's well worth dealing with the demands of the book because it is the best thought-out discussion of cross-examination in print. ...if you can figure out what the authors are trying to say about how to organize a cross and get through their Rube Goldberg "system" of chapters and rules and topic cards and sequence-of-events charts and page preparations -- I eventually gave up on their explanations and started outlining the book in my own way, upon which the sloppy, ill-considered form stopped mattering and the book's powerful insights into the whole process became comprehensible. Ultimately, examining witnesses at trial is about understanding, eliciting, and explaining facts to people who have to decide where truth lies (so to speak). The authors here give more information about how to do this in more ways than anyone else. If you want to "get" what's in this book, you will have to work hard and deal with stupid obstacles to learning and recurrent barriers to clear communication. Get over it. That's a large part about what getting ready to deal with witnesses at trial is all about anyway. Might as well get the practice in a safe environment. The book seems to be written from the perspective of a primarily criminal-law oriented practice in a jurisidiction in which the lawyers have access to basically all the information that will be presented at trial. To me, a civil practice New York lawyer, that seems about as real as the Star Wars movies, but there's still a lot of value here. If you are new to this area of the law, this book is the best way to get a sense of what you can do with cross (at least until I write my book on the subject :-)) If you are experienced, it will give you ways to fine-tune your knowledge and skills. Either way, it will give you good training in patience and delayed gratification -- essential skills for a trial lawyer. If I got to break my rating down, I would give the book a (generous) two stars for accessibilty and a (conservative) five stars for concepts and information.

The Bible of Cross-Examination
I found Pozner and Dodd's book the best money I've spent since graduating law school. As a criminal defense practicioner, I live and die with cross. The preparation and presentation skills taught in this book work wonders in the courtroom. The first case I tried after reading this book not only resulted in an acquital based purely upon my cross, but the judge congratulated me later by saying "great cross." Believe me, the price tag is the best money you'll spend.

The Cross-Killer
Published in Paperback by Pocket Books (May, 1989)
Author: Marcel Montecino
Average review score:

Really Good Book....Go Out and Get It Today!
This is the second book that I have read from Montecino...this was his first book that he ever wrote apparently...and it was excellent! The characters were well done...I felt so bad for one particular character...Esther....she goes through so much...the only fault that I found was that I wish that the author would have focused a bit more on the relationship between Esther and Clarke Johnson....otherwise the book was great! Heartstopping...kept me guessing what was going to happen next....and in some parts it definately throws you for a few spins! I am going to read "Big Time" now...which is also by Montecino...... Happy Reading to all!

Powerful stuff
Never have I read a book where the multiple plots and characters tie together and link so successfully without being disjointed and hard to comprehend. It was a hard book to read in that it was finely printed and so laden with characters that all link to the protagonist Jack Gold. Despite this, it was so harrowing and full of unmitigated violence and suspense that it was hard to put down! I suggest you start reading it in the morning to avoid the late night, straining over the fluroescent lights, want to put it down but can't because I have to know what's going to happen scenario. Some pretty graphic imagery in there too- not for the tender hearted or hypersensitive types. Pretty good for a first novel too- perhaps Montecino has tried a little TOO hard to include every possible element of a murder novel, making it very intense- still excellent though.

BUY THIS BOOK (and read it)
This is the best police thriller I've read in ages.... Well written, great dialoge and a totally uncompromising hero... read this book!

Cross-Country Ski Vacations: A Guide to the Best Resorts, Lodges, and Groomed Trails in North America
Published in Paperback by John Muir Pubns (November, 1999)
Authors: Jonathan Wiesel and Dianna Delling
Average review score:

good breadth, poor depth
There are some rave reviews about this book already posted. I do not want to unduly detract from this excellent book. However, I do believe some balance should be given. This book, as a vacation guide, is ok. It provides a broad sweep of resorts and fine ski areas, but without any indepth insights about any of them. If you're interested in trying out a new area, this guide is excellent as a starting point for your web research. You will need other guides, or dig out on the web or from references, to really plan out your trip.

I was particularly disappointed with the lack of information available on Northeast areas, but perhaps my expectations were off...again partially due to the rave reviews on this site.
For example, 1 page is given about the Lake Placid region. Perhaps this region is more well known than others so a reminder is not needed?

Fundamentally, I think this guide tries to take on too large a geographic region. I was looking for a few selections in different price categories that were independently reviewed,
and best-in-class. This book doesn't quite hit that mark.

It's like having a good friend reveal his vacation secrets!
Thanks to Jon Wiesel for doing the leg work for this great guide--and kudos for presenting his exhaustive research with such style and wit. It's been a wonderful help in planning (and dreaming) for family ski vacations; I've also used it extensively for my business. It's clear Wiesel has done his homework, and he understands what skiers are looking for: We want to know how good the tracks are, but we also want to know about the food, the beds, the hosts, etc., not to mention approximately how much money we'll be spending and how long it will take to get there. And the best thing: Weisel's love for skiing comes across loud and clear--echoing the way so many of us feel about the sport. Thanks!

I want to ski there!
Cross-Country Ski Vacations is a delicious introduction to North American cross-country ski resorts and a refreshing testimonial to what's best about snow: skiing upon it!

Jonathan Wiesel's humorous dialogue leads readers past the continent's biggest mountains and over the finest snows while highlighting lodges, food and services. In particular, I enjoyed the personal connection that the writer gives within each chapter by introducing readers to the local skiers or the local history.

It's obvious that the writer has skied every one of the trails in his book and that he would love to have each reader join him on the cross-country ski pistes.

By the Grace of the Sea : A Woman's Solo Odyssey Around the World
Published in Hardcover by International Marine/Ragged Mountain Press (09 August, 2002)
Author: Pat Henry
Average review score:

Way to much whining
I am about a 3rd the way through this book and I am so sick of reading about this self centered woman. Everyone has regrets and makes mistakes but get over it. So many times her life is spared only by shear luck and a gardian angel. I doubt I will read on, it is to depressing.

Great adventure by a courageous woman.
This is a marvelous book, very well written, about an amazing adventure. Her story of sailing around the world in a 31-foot boat is interesting enough. To do it all alone, without enough money to start with, having to figure out ways of making money in strange ports as she went - that is amazing. I sailed around the world in a 42 foot boat with my wife to share the duties and with enough money. I thought I had an adventure. To do it the way Pat did is truly remarkable. Her writing accurately reflects the joys and challenges of world cruising. Seen from a woman's eyes, she saw things I never saw (I'm male) She was exposed to dangers I never was, and she reacted to situations in ways that help me understand women a little better. On top of all this, she deals intimately with the healing of troubled relationships she left at home, and the rethinking of what she wants her life to be. I enjoyed every page of this book.

Loved this book
We were fortunate to meet Pat Henry (author of "Grace of the Sea" while visiting Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. We bought her book and couldn't put it down. Even though this book should be read by every women, the men loved it too.

Bearing the Cross - Part I
Published in Audio Cassette by Blackstone Audiobooks (January, 1999)
Authors: David J. Garrow and Jeff Riggenbach
Average review score:

A Thorough History
I knew very little about MLK and the civil rights movement before reading this book. It was a very detailed account of MLK's involvement in civil rights and his personal life. From the late 50's to his death the author tells you practically everything about his life. Though it would be easy for an author to be bias toward or against King, I felt that Garrow did a good job of just telling the story and leaving conclusions to the reader.

required reading
Although not completed I already have the idea that it should be required reading for Seniors in High School and/or a Freshman College requirement. After all it is a most significant event of modern day history along with the civil war and both world wars. David Garrow simultaneously celebrates and condemns human nature by revealing the courage and strength of Dr. King and his followers even as his wife and daughter are attacked with fire bombs by the hateful white mobs. A very compelling beginning story of Rosa Parks... the injustices and inhumane treatment she suffered at the hands of a hate filled people...sets the stage for a work that could begin a lesson in tolerance and unity for our next generations. I unfortunately believe we are still condemned to live our hateful existence in America and the world until works like this can get the attention they deserve.

The most comprehensive biography on King you'll find
First of all, this isn't a biography for the weak-hearted. It's around 1,000 pages on long. Rather than bouncing from Montgomery to Birmingham to Selma, as if the Southern Civil Rights Movement carried itself entirely on momentum, this book explores the details and compromises that went into King's political maneuverings.

Garrow is also unafraid to discuss King's frailties, implicitly positing (and answering) the question: don't a persons public actions and deeds outweigh their private shortcomings? (yes)

This is not only the best book on King that exists, it may very well be the best book on the Southern Civil Rights Movement of the 60's that exists.

A Certain Distance to Cross
Published in Paperback by iUniverse.com (January, 2001)
Author: Adrian Quest
Average review score:

A Melodic First Novel
The Distance in the title refers to sailing from the island, where the professor and his dead wife shared life, and the town across the bay. Also the new relationship is the distance between him, the older man, and the new romance with a young photographer. Can he accept love again and new interests? A melodic first novel telling of love that is beautiful the second time around. The author's treatment of the dead first love brings tears. Nature in Maine on the ocean is described through the eyes of his new young love, the photographer, Ellen.

Pick This One Up!
I found this book to be thoroughy enjoyable and quite believable; a real hard book to put down. The kind of book you just want to read non-stop. As a matter of fact, I did read it in only 2 days - something I don't normally do. The story line was masterfully written with a creative flow and continunity to it that was maintained throughout the book. The charecters were totally deglightful and I could easily relate to their life experiences. You could feel their pain as they both attempted to put their past behind them and embark again on another journey into love. Additionally, as a Maine native, and professional photographer, I was very plesantly surprised to find great accuracy as to the scenery and location descriptions. The photography knowledge was also right on the mark. The ending left me yearning to continue on with these two people's lives and hoping for a sequel to discover the next chapter in this charming love story. If you are looking for a romantic narrative that is totally believable, laid back, rich in simplicity and definitely truly poignant - this is it. I highly recommend A Certain Distance to Cross as a total delight from cover to cover - don't miss it!

Heartwarming and Uplifting
Quest writes beautifully and his soaring prose takes you to the coast of Maine. Very much reminiscent of another powerful New England love story I recently read called "Shade of the Maple" by Kirk Martin. Both are a couple steps above Sparks from a literary perspective, but still deliver the emotional impact.

The Real Estate Agent's Business Planning Guide
Published in Paperback by Real Estate Educators Assn (August, 1994)
Author: Carla Cross
Average review score:

For experienced agents only
Being a new real estate agent I brought this book with the hope that it would help me build my new business. I was wrong. This book mainly talks about looking at your past few years of realestate sales and changing your program using your past data into a better program. Utterly useless for the beginning agent. Carla Cross has a very good title writer for her books, since i brought her another one of her books in vain.

Solid Planning Guide
Even if you appreciate the importance of planning your business -- a MUST -- this guide is a very good resource to get you started. Much better for the experienced agent than a new licensee.

GREAT BOOK FOR REAL ESTATE PLANNING
Even though another reviewer said this is not good for a new agent, I disagree. Firstly, it is my Broker's favorite and he has built a successful business using it. Secondly, IT SHOWS YOU HOW TO FIGURE PROFIT AN LOSS ON ANY GIVEN REAL ESTATE "MARKET" OR "FARM", something no other book explains this way. Once you know how much revenue a given area could produce, then you can pick the best areas to concentrate in. Since we all have to focus on a few areas or farms, this book gives a great way to choose the best farms to work on.

Because of this formula, I am able, as a new agent, to not waste my time on unprofitable markets. Although it is not just for beginners, this book is a good one to start with and it will grow with you as your career grows.

The Ultimate Lean Routine: 12-Week Cross Training & Fat Loss Program
Published in Paperback by Summit Pub Group (01 September, 1996)
Author: Greg Isaacs
Average review score:

You won't need a lot more than this book and MOTIVATION
This is an excellent book. It's written simply and clearly, no real complications, and the author can really connect with the reader.

The workouts are expained in a an excellent way; the alternating of workouts is the most effective I have ever tried, and particularly the type of training applied to each workout can create incredible changes for the better WAY faster than any other workout system I tried. It's simple: with a test, you find the right rate YOU need wo do your cardio at (and no, it's not the same old stuff), and work at that rate, until you feel you have improved and then you can take the test again and work out at the newly found rate. Same for the strength training: you find your 10-rep max, perform 3 sets (a warm-up set, a work set and a blast set) and stretch in between sets - a technique that is most effective for increasing muscle strength and particularly for women, to get rid of cellulite in your thighs.

The dietary prescription may be too much work for some, not doable for some others and fast burners (see metabolic typing) will probably need a little more protein and good fats to feel full; but generally the dietary guidelines are good and a definite improvement over most people's diets. The fact that the diet part of the plan cannot really be personalized to the needs of the reader made it lose 1 star, I would have given it 5 stars otherwise. But it really is an excellent book. If you feel it's time you start working on improving your body shape and your health, or if you have been working out but you don't feel you are getting the results you deserve for your efforts, this is the book for you - you'll change for the better, really fast.

This book is your body's "Owners Manual"
This book is easy to understand and easy to follow. One does not have to follow every recipe. Just use it as a common sense guide, eat accordingly and follow the exersize regimen. It takes no more than one hour a day, sometime less than an hour. I lost 30 pounds of fat in 90 days following this program. I just wish that Greg Isaacs would write a follow up regimen for those who want to take his advice and move on to another level of health and fitness.

It Works!
Greg's plan makes sense and you see immediate results. More importantly is how you feel about yourself. Early into the second week, you just start feeling trimmer, stonger, generally better! I highly recommend the Ultimate Lean Routine as a way of life and this book captures it all! Many thanks, Jill Bertolet
